WELCOME LETTER

Dear Colleagues, Scientists and LIBS community members,
It is a pleasure and an honour to host the XII Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy meeting in Bari, in the very heart of Mediterranean region. Historically, this land has always been a bridge between different cultures and now it is proud to welcome researchers from all over the world, coming for exchanging ideas, results and knowledge on laser-induced plasma spectroscopy.
This conference has been marking the progress of LIBS in the last twenty years and is now ready to be updated to fit the new situation where a larger community need to be included and high health security standards must be considered. We are dealing with these issues at our best with our experience in the field, with an extreme effort for applying the best security standards, with our passion for science and scientific exchanges. We are preparing everything to make you have a fruitful conference and a good time in a safe environment.
The main goal of this event is the optimization of the exchange of information between fundamental research and applications’ world. In this respect within the official program, that will comprise oral presentations, invited presentations, topical lectures and permanent poster exhibitions, the meeting will provide social events in order to encourage informal discussions between participants.
Finally, although the conference will be in person, on-line participation will be available for people from those countries that cannot travel in EU and a parallel internet event will be prepared.
At this point, from your side, we expect your best contribution with your latest results and your ideas in order to make LIBS impact more and more important in science and technology.
Italy is the Country of the Renaissance, so take part with us to this event and let’s consider LIBS2022 as a “renascence” for the LIBS community after this long and disheartening pause.
On behalf of the program chairs,
Alessandro De Giacomo, Vincenzo Palleschi and Roberta Fantoni.

LIBS CONTEST

The LIBS 2022 quantification contest in now online: Compete with LIBS teams all over the globe and find out how your quantification methodology stands its ground!

Your task is to predict the Cr, Mn, Mo, and Ni content of 15 metal alloys. More information is provided in the README file. The datasets are available here.

The results will be announced at the LIBS 2022 conference in Bari (IT) and communicated with the participants who provide a valid email address. The three best-performing groups will co-author a paper, describing the methodology used and the results obtained. The paper will be published in the Virtual Special Issue that Spectrochimica Acta B will devote to the Conference.

You can submit your predictions by uploading a file here (requires a Google account), by filling out a Google form (or an alternative), or by simply sending them via email to kepes@vutbr.cz as attachment. The deadline is 23:59:59, August 19, 2022.

Note that you can submit your answer repeatedly. However, only your latest answer will be considered, and you will receive no feedback for preliminary submissions.

Looking forward to your contributions.

NEWS

XII “Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy” conference will start a new course for LIBS community. After more than twenty years we need to hold the same excellence and novelties from the scientific and technological points of view and, simultaneously, we have to fit the World’s changes. From one hand, the number of LIBS researchers and users has strongly increased in all the Countries, but on the second hand the pandemic effects have impacted the exchange of expertise between researchers. For these reasons the event will be organized in presence at high security level, but at the same time it will include the participation and contribution also in remote. All the remote contributions will be recorded, as well as, the lectures of the conference and will be available to the participants ten days after the closing of the event in Bari. This will permit to the participants to attend the presentation at their best. In order to support economically the conference attendance and, at the same time to keep the scientific discussion inclusive between the participants, special events will be organized. Students are invited to take part with low fee and to apply for poster awards. European senior researchers will also propose a remote course on different basic aspects of LIBS. A Regression Context is organized by the group of CEITEC in Brno and will be discussed during the conference.
PUBLICATION: A thematic issues of Spectrochimica Acta Part Part B will be devoted to the conference papers.

Social Events

1) AperiLIBS: Continuing scientific discussion with a good drink and some fresh food. Taking time to get confident with the city after your arrival.

2) LIBS on the beach: What is more inspiring than drinking at the sunset in a Mediterranean beach with some typical street food from Bari? Collect your ideas for your future work and discuss them with your colleagues from all over the world.

3) AgriLIBS: Apulia is traditionally the region of pasta and mozzarella. Enjoy genuine food in a Masseria (traditional country farm) and share your questions on what you have heard during the conference.

Dear Company,

The world XII Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS 2022) conference will be held in Bari, Italy 5-9 September 2022 and it will be an important event for the community after this long pause. As you know LIBS is now a mature technique and the role of Companies with their technologies, is playing a crucial role in the dissemination and in the development of LIBS around the world in many applications.

We would be glad to have your support both from the economical point of view (see on the right for tentative price) and from the technical point of view with the participation in round table and discussion during the conference in order to tuning the needs of the research world on instrumentation and the possibility of implementing your products for more advanced applications. For this reason the company's exposition will be located in a strategic place where participants can easily keep in touch and meet your representatives.

As we are preparing the website, for now we are collecting the expression of interest from sponsors. If your company is interested in contributing to the LIBS 2022, please send us your feedback and your logo with the link to your website.

For any question do not hesitate in contacting me.

Kind regards

Alessandro De Giacomo, Chair of LIBS 2022.

THE  CITY

Bari is the capital city of Apulia, one of the most beautiful regions of Italy, on the Adriatic Sea.
It is the second most important economic centre of mainland Southern Italy, and is well
known as a port and university city.
Bari has the most important Romanic church in the world (Basilica of Saint Nicholas),
one of the most important Italian Opera houses (Teatro Petruzzelli), the Castle and a
middle age old-town mixing middle-eastern style with ancient roman roots. Traditionally
Bari is also an important commercial city where most Italian designer shops can be found
walking downtown. On the other hand, near Bari there are several amazing historical cities
such as Castel del Monte, Ostuni, Locorotondo, Polignano, Giovinazzo, etc. that,
together with the Southern region Apulia (Salento), are becoming some of the most
visited holiday destinations in Italy. The beauties of the places and the hospitality of the
people as well as the delicious gastronomic specialties will make you want to come
back again or to extend your stay in Apulia.

THE FOOD

Apulia has one of the most famous Italian cuisines based on traditional Mediterranean diet.
When you will land in Bari you will see dozens of miles of olive groves, and grapes facing the
blue of the Mediterranean sea.
It’s little wonder that olive oil should play a major role in the region’s cooking, as do cereals
and grains gown. Some of the grain becomes pasta — Bari is especially known for
orecchiette, pasta whose shape brings the human ear to mind — and some becomes special
bread; the bread of the town of Apulia is renowned, and throughout the region you’ll find thin
pizza, focaccia, panzerotti and friselle, disks of dried bread to be dipped in water and
seasoned, with olive oil, hot peppers, and freshly cut tomatoes. The Typical apulian meal
consists in fine cheeses (Puglia is one of the major shepherding regions of Italy and
the first Italian mozzarella producer), excellent meat (lamb, pork, beef and various kind
sousages) and superb fish and sea food (the region boasts hundreds of miles of
coastline
, the water is crystal clear, and the catch is both plentiful and varied).
Among the preferred vegetables are fava beans, lampasioni (a type of bulb), turnip,
and eggplant. And to finish up, Puglia boasts some spectacular almond cakes,
and has excellent fruit; especially different typologies of grapes.
A final word about wine: Though Puglia was known for supplying powerful blending
wines to winemakers elsewhere, the region’s producers have begun
to attract considerable attention with the wines they bottle themselves.
In particular, look for Primitivo and Nero di Troia. People interested in testing wine
can find more information at Italys finest wines.
